Radiation Safety Training

Radioactive Material Users

The radioactive materials license issued to the UCI campus by the Radiologic Health Branch of the California Department of Public Health establishes minimum training requirements for new radioactive materials users.

The training program consists of two elements: Radiation Safety Part I and on-the-job training.

  1. Radiation Safety Part I
    • Must be completed PRIOR TO handling any radioactivity.
    • Is an online training course consisting of several modules, each followed by a short quiz.
    • Registration is through the UC Learning Center.
  2. On-The-Job Training
    • New radioisotope users are required to receive supervised, on-the-job training by the responsible principal investigator or a senior researcher designated by the responsible principal investigator.
    • This on-the-job training must be completed WITHIN ONE MONTH of starting to work with radioactive materials, and it must be documented on the On the Job Training form.

Radiation Producing Machine Users

State regulations issued by the Radiologic Health Branch of the California Department of Public Health set minimum training requirements for new x-ray machine and/or particle accelerator users. The training program consists of two elements: initial orientation and on-the-job training.

  1. Radiation-producing Machine Safety Orientation
    • This course consists of taking the Radiation Producing Machines eCourse available on the UC Learning Center and reviewing the Prenatal Radiation Exposure Policy (if female).
    • The course must be completed PRIOR TO operating any radiation-producing machines
  2. On-The-Job Training
    • New machine users are required to complete adequate supervised on-the-job training under the direct, personal supervision of the responsible principal investigator or a senior researcher designated by the responsible principal investigator.
    • This on-the-job training must be completed WITHIN THREE MONTHS of starting to work with radiation-producing machines, and it must be documented on the On the Job Training form.
