Coyote Sightings on Campus

Coyotes have been sighted in various areas of the UCI campus. Sightings may involve a single coyote or multiple coyotes. UCI Police Department, Environmental Health & Safety, and Irvine Animal Control are aware of the reports and continue to monitor the situation.

Animal control officers respond to reported sightings as appropriate; however, coyotes often move away before officers can safely approach them. According to animal control officials, observed coyotes generally do not appear to be ill. Visible hair loss and skin conditions, commonly known as mange, can occur among wildlife and are not contagious to humans.

For your safety:

• Do not approach or feed coyotes.
• Do not attempt to treat, touch, or take pictures with them.
• Keep a safe distance and allow coyotes space to leave the area.
• Call 9-1-1 if a coyote behaves aggressively or poses an immediate threat.

Approaching coyotes may cause them to react unpredictably.
